Structuralism is a twentieth-century intellectual movement, inaugurated in 1950 by the cultural anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss. At its core lies a single guiding idea: that things cannot be understood in isolation, but must instead be seen in the context of the larger structure of which they form a part.
René Wellek (1982) even argued that novelists can teach us more about human nature than psychologists themselves. This view affirms that literary works are not merely entertainment, but also a mirror reflecting the complexity of the human psyche.
